Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment that uses a derivative of the botulinum toxin to temporarily reduce the severity of facial lines and wrinkles. When you receive injections of Botox, they interrupt the chemical signals that control the muscles in your face. As a result, the muscles soften, and lines smooth out. Botox is suitable for reducing:

  • Moderate to severe frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines

Botox has been in use as a treatment for medical conditions for more than 30 years and is fully approved by the FDA for cosmetic applications.

Why do I have lines and wrinkles?

Lines and wrinkles are an inevitable consequence of aging, but they affect everyone differently. Some people develop deep creases in their brows early, while others have only a few fine lines, even in their fifties. Genetics plays a crucial part in determining how well you age, but other factors also play a role, such as:

  • Excessive exposure to the sun
  • Environmental pollution
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Long-term effects of stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Dehydration

Over time, particularly after 50, the body stops producing collagen and elastin in the same quantities, causing your skin and underlying tissues to lose elasticity and volume. This makes your skin looser and more prone to developing lines and wrinkles.

What happens during a Botox treatment session?

Each Botox session typically takes around 10 minutes to carry out, so it’s perfect for a quick lunchtime pick-me-up. Before the session, a facial analysis determines the most appropriate areas for treatment, which are marked on your face to show where the injections need to go.

The injection will likely feel like a pinch but shouldn’t be painful. If you’re concerned about needles, you can have an ice pack or ask for a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area.

How soon will I see the results of my Botox treatment?

You don’t have to wait long, as Botox starts to work within the first day or two following your treatment. The effects of moderate to severe frown lines can last for up to four months, but results do vary between patients.

If you wish to maintain the improvements you receive with Botox, you need to return to Beeve Vision Care Center every three to four months for another treatment session.
